I know I tend to bang on about website maintenance but there is a reason for that. That reason is: because it is actually bloody important!

Knowing that there are websites out there who haven’t had an update since Trump had a full head of hair sets my eye a’twitchin’. I decided to put together a simple list of reasons to explain why you needed website maintenance yesterday.

5 reasons why you need website maintenance

1. SECURITY

This is THE most important reason, especially if your website contains client information. WordPress, Themes and Plugins updates usually contain updates to security as well as new features so updating these is critical in preventing attacks from hackers who just love a website that has been sitting there unattended.

2. BACKUPS

It is so important that you have regular, preferably daily, backups of your website so you can restore it should anything happen. *Knocks on wood* Being able to restore to a previous backup, whenever, gives you that extra piece of mind. Your host MIGHT have semi-regular back ups, but you generally have to pay a tidy amount to have your website restored should anything happen.

3. SEO

Google loves an up to date website. If regular updates and security checks are completed it makes your website look legit and squeaky clean. If your website isn’t regularly updated, you might start going down in rankings and ultimately be de-indexed as Google might assume is no longer relevant or affected by malware.

4. CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT

Customers like a smooth, fast website. You want to keep your website visitors on your website and minimise the bounce rate. Keeping your website up to date and optimised helps promote a professional image.

5. Keeping up to date with technology

Customers like a smooth, fast website. You want to keep your website visitors on your website and minimise the bounce rate. Keeping your website up to date and optimised helps promote a professional image.

6. Bonus: NEW CONTENT

It’s important to continually up date and add new content. This keeps your website fresh and relevant. Search engines and customers love both. You can do easily by:
  • adding new fresh content
  • adding a blog (and yes, regularly adding to said blog)
  • updating current content – wording, images etc
  • checking for spelling and grammar errors.
  • Website maintenance is like taking your car to be serviced. This all leaves you time to concentrate on doing what you do best – running your business – and gives you the piece of mind that your website is in top shape.
